Planning your holidays strategically can more than double your time off in 2026. By aligning 25 days of annual leave with weekends and bank holidays, you can enjoy extended breaks throughout the year without exceeding your leave allowance. Below is a detailed guide, organised by each holiday period, showing which dates to book off and how many consecutive days off you can get in each instance.
Official Bank Holidays in England and Wales – 2026
England and Wales have 8 official public (bank) holidays in 2026:
-
New Year’s Day: Thursday 1 January
-
Good Friday: Friday 3 April
-
Easter Monday: Monday 6 April
-
Early May Bank Holiday (May Day): Monday 4 May
-
Spring Bank Holiday: Monday 25 May
-
Summer Bank Holiday: Monday 31 August
-
Christmas Day: Friday 25 December
-
Boxing Day (Substitute): Monday 28 December
(When a holiday falls on a weekend (e.g. Boxing Day 2026 is on Saturday), the following weekday becomes a “substitute” bank holiday.)

New Year’s 2026 Break (January)
Holiday: New Year’s Day (Thu 1 Jan 2026)
Optimal Leave: Friday 2 January 2026 (1 day)
Resulting Break: From Thu 1 Jan to Sun 4 Jan – a 4-day weekend using just 1 day of leave. By taking off the Friday after New Year’s, you benefit from the holiday Thursday and the adjacent weekend.
Tip: If your employer allows carrying 2025 leave or an early start, taking Friday 2 Jan off gives you 4 consecutive days off at New Year. (Those with remaining 2025 leave could even add 29–31 Dec 2025 to extend the festive break to 11 days, but the main plan below uses only 2026’s allowance.)
Easter 2026 (March/April)
Holidays: Good Friday (Fri 3 Apr 2026) and Easter Monday (Mon 6 Apr 2026)
Optimal Leave: Mon 30 March –- Thu 2 April and Tue 7 – Fri 10 April (8 days total)
Resulting Break: From Sat 28 March to Sun 12 April – a 16-day continuous break using 8 days of leave.
By taking the four workdays before Good Friday and the four after Easter Monday, you bridge three weekends and two holidays. This means you’re off work from the weekend before Easter through the weekend after. 16 days off (over two weeks) are achieved by using 8 annual leave days, maximizing your spring vacation.
-
Dates Off: Saturday 28 March – Sunday 12 April (return to work on Mon 13 April)
-
Leave Used: 8 days (30-31 Mar, 1-2 Apr; 7-10 Apr)
-
Days Off Gained: 16 days (includes 3 weekends + Good Fri & Easter Mon)
Early May Bank Holiday 2026 (May Day)
Holiday: Early May Bank Holiday (Mon 4 May 2026)
Optimal Leave: Tue 5 – Fri 8 May (4 days)
Resulting Break: From Sat 2 May to Sun 10 May – 9 consecutive days off using 4 days of leave.
By taking the four days immediately after the early May bank holiday, you connect the holiday Monday with two weekends. You’ll be off from the Saturday before until the Sunday after, returning to work on Monday 11 May. This yields over a week of vacation for just 4 leave days.
-
Dates Off: Saturday 2 May – Sunday 10 May
-
Leave Used: 4 days (5-8 May)
-
Days Off Gained: 9 days (includes two weekends + May 4 holiday)
Spring Bank Holiday 2026 (Late May)
Holiday: Spring Bank Holiday (Mon 25 May 2026)
Optimal Leave: Tue 26 – Fri 29 May (4 days)
Resulting Break: From Sat 23 May to Sun 31 May – 9 consecutive days off using 4 days of leave.
Similar to early May, take the four days after the late May bank holiday to get a full week off. You’ll be off from the Saturday prior to the holiday through the following Sunday. This spans two weekends, with the Monday bank holiday in between, giving you 9 days total away from work.
-
Dates Off: Saturday 23 May – Sunday 31 May
-
Leave Used: 4 days (26–29 May)
-
Days Off Gained: 9 days (includes two weekends + May 25 holiday)
Summer Bank Holiday 2026 (August)
Holiday: Summer Bank Holiday (Mon 31 Aug 2026)
Optimal Leave: Tue 1 – Fri 4 September (4 days)
Resulting Break: From Sat 29 Aug to Sun 6 Sept – 9 consecutive days off using 4 days of leave.
By booking the four days after the August bank holiday, you’ll be off from the last weekend of August through the first weekend of September. This extended summer break gives you a nice long stretch off work as summer winds down.
-
Dates Off: Saturday 29 August – Sunday 6 September
-
Leave Used: 4 days (1-4 Sept)
-
Days Off Gained: 9 days (includes two weekends + Aug 31 holiday)
Christmas 2026 & New Year 2027 Break
Holidays: Christmas Day (Fri 25 Dec 2026) and Boxing Day substitute (Mon 28 Dec 2026). (New Year’s Day 2027 on Fri 1 Jan is also a holiday, effectively giving a free day off to start 2027.)
Optimal Leave: Thu 24 Dec, Tue 29 Dec, Wed 30 Dec, Thu 31 Dec 2026 (4 days)
Resulting Break: From Thu 24 Dec 2026 to Sun 3 Jan 2027 – 11 consecutive days off using 4 days of leave.
By taking Christmas Eve and the three workdays between the Christmas and New Year holidays, you achieve an uninterrupted break spanning the holidays. You’ll be off from Christmas Eve through the first weekend of 2027, returning to work on Mon 4 January. This period includes two holiday long weekends (Christmas and New Year’s) bridged by a few annual leave days:
-
Dates Off: Thursday 24 December 2026 – Sunday 3 January 2027
-
Leave Used: 4 days (24, 29, 30, 31 Dec)
-
Days Off Gained: 11 days (includes Christmas & New Year’s holidays plus weekends)
(If you had extra leave, you could also book 21–23 Dec, turning this into 16 days off from 19 Dec – 3 Jan using 7 leave days. But our primary plan sticks to the 25-day allowance.)
Summary: 2026 Annual Leave Optimization
By following the above plan, you use all 25 days of annual leave to strategically unlock extended breaks throughout 2026. In total, this strategy yields 58 days off (including weekends and holidays) in exchange for 25 leave days. In other words, you more than double your time away from work:
-
Total Leave Days Used: 25
-
Total Days Off Gained: 58 (with careful alignment of leave + 8 bank holidays + weekends)
Breakdown of Leave vs Time Off:
-
New Year’s: 1 day leave → 4 days off
-
Easter: 8 days leave → 16 days off
-
Early May: 4 days leave → 9 days off
-
Late May: 4 days leave → 9 days off
-
Summer Aug: 4 days leave → 9 days off
-
Christmas/New Year: 4 days leave → 11 days off
By maximizing each holiday period for long continuous breaks, you ensure that 2026 is packed with substantial time off to relax and enjoy, all within the standard annual leave allowance. Plan ahead and book early – with this guide you can make your 25 days of leave go as far as possible in 2026!
